The Maine Press Association (MPA), founded in 1864, is one of the oldest professional news organizations in the nation. Our goals, as spelled out in our charter and by-laws are:

To promote and foster high ethical standards and the best interests of the newspapers, journalists, and media organizations of the state of Maine that constitute its membership;

To encourage improved business and editorial practices and better media environment in the state; and

To improve the conditions of journalism and journalists by promoting and protecting the principles of freedom of speech and of the press and the public’s right to know.

Some of our benefits include, but are not limited to:

Fellowships and Scholarships: Since 2000 the MPA has awarded more than $33,000 to fund training for staffers at member newspapers. This direct benefit is a way for members to get their dues money back. Through the MPA Memorial Scholarship, the association also helps journalism students pay their tuition at the University of Maine.

Conferences and Workshops: The 2012 Fall Conference will be held Oct. 13 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Freeport. The schedule will include workshops, Hall of Fame inductions, the annual scholarship benefit auction and Better Newspaper Contest award presentations – and some free time for networking and socializing.

Legal and Legislative Services: Assisted by attorneys from Preti Flaherty, the MPA works in the Legislature to promote and protect the interests of the state’s newspapers. In recent years the MPA Legislative Committee has been increasingly active in initiating and influencing legislation that affects our industry. Preti Flaherty also offers free consultations to MPA members for guidance with right-to-know questions.

Discount On-Line Training: The Maine Press Association entered into a partnership with the Inland Press Association in 2009 to obtain discounts for online webinar classes. The training includes sales techniques, design, editorial enhancement, employee motivation and using social networking to market your products. Employees of MPA member newspapers can take the courses for only $75, a $50 discount off the regular price.

E-News Updates: E-News Updates are sent regularly to all regular, associate and individual members. The newsletter includes industry news and trends, and up-to-date information about the MPA’s events and activities.

Maine Press Association Hall of Fame: The MPA Hall of Fame honors those who have made lifetime contributions to the profession. The Hall of Fame, based at the University of Maine, helps to preserve the history of Maine Newspapers and the people who have made them great.

Online Classifieds: Regular and associate members may post classified ads on our Web site at no charge.
